My Best Friend's Birthday

I can't remember the first time we met or talked. It's so long ago that I have forgotten what started everything. You know, when, you meet someone for the first time and you just know that you will get along well? For me and Julienne, I think it's because we were not one of the "cool" kids in high school.

We didn't as much as lift a finger brushing our hair so that it will curl at the ends like Teri Hatcher's in Lois and Clark. We did nothing to make us popular, or likeable because we just didn't care about any of those. I mean, we're friendly, but we're not trying too hard, you know what I mean? We had that "Take me as I am, or bite me" kind of attitude (well maybe not the 'bite me' thing). You find us boring? Uh, okay. We're not interested either. That sort of thing. We didn't strive for Individuality in a gothic attire, gum-chewing, hey-look-at-me-I'm-Avril-Lavigne way.

We love funny people. Our circle of friends had the funniest people in high school. We made crazy nicknames for each other. Julienne had been associated with the most number of nicks, including, but not limited to, Jul, Juls, Mems, Memur and En-en. I know. Memur?

In no particular order, our favorite conversation topics during class breaks include: Basketball or How Caidic Is So Awesome, Did You SEE Him?, Movies Shown on TV After the Soap Operas, Music by Bands Whose Video Just Got Shown in MTV (e.g. Kula Shaker), Boyzone or Ronan Keating Rocks But I Like Shane, Too, Because He Is So Tall and Unique With His Cut Eyebrow, Other Boy Bands (yup, those were the days), TV Series (e.g. Lois and Clark, Xena), Math (I'm not kidding), Hollywood Child Actors and Where Are They Now (read: Karate Kid), Family Anecdotes, Her Quite Popular Fourth Cousin Basketball Player Whom We Find Cute, Favorite Old Movies Some of Which Are Listed in Her Notebook, and so on.

We look like our moms. We hated wearing skirts (cheerleading skirts, especially). The only time we were seen in a dress was during prom. We would read Scientific American and Discovery rather than romantic novels. After singing the song "All I Have To Do Is Dream" by the Everly brothers, our friends debated over who provided the harmony, me or her. They reached a consensus that it was both. Towards the end of our high school, she founded a club with friends as members and made a website. Now everyone knows how we looked like in high school.

Then we graduated and I came here. our conversations are now limited to snail mails and e-mails, frequent at first, but now reduced to about once in two months. She was the first person I e-mailed to when I got access to a computer in Singapore. I forgot her birthday last year and I suffered one week of guilt. But she forgave me and we still talk. She's still the same Julienne I know, passionate and unique. I still love writing long letters to her and it's amazing that we still keep in touch until now.

We have known each other since we were 12/13 and yesterday, she turned 22. Happy Birthday, best friend. Thanks for being a part of my life. You taught me to be real and to love myself.

She made me a button that is sooo cute! And purple! How cool is that? Love it. Thanks, Jul.
